Eduard Russenberger

Eduard Russenberger (born May 31, 1834 in Schleitheim ; † August 17, 1909 in Zurich ) was a Swiss liberal - conservative politician .

Russenberger's parents were the veterinarian and later tax officials Heinrich Russenberger (1805-1901) and Catharina Russenberger, née Güntert (1804-1836), who came from Büsingen on the Upper Rhine . He had two older sisters. After the death of his mother, the father married Anna Maria von Ow, with whom he had three other sons. Russenberger graduated from high school in Schaffhausen , but without a Matura . In 1852 he worked in an institute in Vevey and did a legal internship in Freiburg. He completed his law studies in Heidelberg and Zurich in 1858 .

From 1865 to 1878 he was a member of the city council of Schaffhausen. From 1864 to 1878 he was in the cantonal council , from 1868 to 1869 and 1873 to 1874 its president. From 1864, but only until 1866, he was an adjunct to the public prosecutor, and from 1876 to 1878 he was district court president in Schaffhausen. From 1873 he was a liberal-conservative Council of States , in 1878 he resigned. In 1876 he was liquidator of the Bern-Lucerne Railway and in 1878 the National Railway . From 1878 to 1894 he was director of the Nordostbahn and from 1890 to 1894 its vice-president. Under pressure from the major shareholder Adolf Guyer-Zeller , who rose like a coup to chairman of the board of directors of Nordostbahn, Russenberger and other members of the board of directors and management had to leave. There were layoffs and workers went on a successful strike in March 1897.

Russenberger was brought in by his college friend, Federal Councilor Josef Zemp, as an advisor and organizer of the nationalization of the railways. He was on the board of directors of the Schaffhausen savings bank from 1869 to 1874 and of the SBB from 1902 to 1909 . He was also a member of the board of directors of the Zugerbergbahn and several industrial companies. After he passed out in a robbery in Zurich in 1908, his health deteriorated and he died the following year.
