Eduard Stakemeier

Eduard Stakemeier (born June 9, 1904 in Müschede , † December 30, 1970 in Würzburg ) was a German Catholic priest and professor of theology . He is considered to be one of the pioneers of the ecumenical thought in Catholicism .

Life

Eduard Stakemeier studied in Paderborn, Tübingen, Münster and Rome. In Tübingen he joined the Catholic student fraternity Unitas Markomannia in 1925. In 1929 he was ordained a priest in Paderborn. Then he was vicar in Dortmund-Lütgendortmund until 1932 . Between 1932 and 1935, Stakemeier studied in Rome and received his doctorate there in 1934. theol. A year later he did his doctorate again in Tübingen .

Stakemeier became a professor for fundamental theology , comparative religious studies and denominational studies in Paderborn . There he was also director of the Johann Adam Möhler Institute for Ecumenism . He was also a consultor in the Secretariat for Christian Unity, took part in the Second Vatican Council as an advisor to Lorenz Cardinal Jäger and was papal house prelate .

As an author, Stakemeier was very active. A bibliography of his work contains 14 monographs and other independent publications, 14 articles in lexicons and compilations as well as numerous scientific journal articles. 46 essays alone appeared in the journal “Theologie und Glaube”.

He died during a scientific event in Würzburg and was buried in Müschede. In the library of the Johann Adam Möhler Institute for Ecumenism there are around 800 scientific works from his estate.

In Arnsberg a street is named after Stakemeier.
