Eduard Wagner (cartographer)

Eduard Wagner (born March 25, 1811 in Darmstadt ; † August 23, 1885 there ) was a German cartographer .

Life

Eduard Wagner was the son of a Secretary of the War Ministry. From 1827 to 1831 he completed an apprenticeship with the Grand Ducal Hessian State Lithography. He worked on the topographical map of the Grand Duchy of Hesse on a scale of 1: 25,000. From 1832 he was involved in the creation of the "Atlas of the German Federal States" in Gotha for the Erfurt publishing house of the Müller bookstore, which was printed by Carl Hellfarth in Gotha. He designed nine of 55 sheets based on the templates provided by Mr. von Witzleben. On November 1, 1835, he founded an institution in Darmstadt under his name, initially without his own printing company. Since November 14, 1841 there was a business relationship with the bookseller at the time, Karl Baedeker . In 1865 he met Ernst Debes in Gotha , who helped him make drawings, especially for the Baedeker travel guides . Eduard Wagner is the father of the cartographer Heinrich Wagner.

  • Maps and illustrations for all Baedeker's travel guides: all volumes in Germany, Belgium / Holland, Paris, London, Switzerland, Italy. His time was not enough for all of Baedeker's orders, which is why he hired the lithographers Heinrich Kiepert from Berlin and Henry Lange from Leipzig
  • Illustration from “Leeder's Bible Atlas” and from wall maps of Europe, Germany and Palestine for Zacharias Gerhard Dietrich Baedeker in Essen
  • Illustrations for the Dithmarschen historical atlas for Winters Verlag in Heidelberg
  • 1,868 tickets for the Atlas of Blasius Kozenn in Publisher Ed. Hölzel in Olomouc
