Eduard Warrens (* 1820 in Altona or Stockholm ; † January 5, 1872 in Vienna ) was an Austrian journalist and publicist of German descent.

Life

He was originally called Arens and comes from a respected Jewish merchant family in Hamburg. At a young age, he left his hometown for the United States. All I know is that he made a name for himself there as a political publicist and gained influence. He edited the "Anzeiger des Westens". Warrens played a prominent role in the campaign for the presidency of James K. Polk . Around 1840 he came to Trieste as a US consul , where he soon came into contact with the journal " Journal des Oesterreichischer Lloyd ". He was highly valued by Karl Ludwig von Bruck , a director of the company and the governor of the Austrian coastal region , Count Franz von Stadion , for his keen mind and journalistic skills. At the request of Count Stadion, Warrens moved to Vienna and headed the “Journal des Oesterreichischer Lloyd”, which was also transferred to Vienna. Under his leadership, the newspaper, originally conceived as an economic organ, was transformed into a political paper. During the Crimean War it took an anti-Russian stance contrary to the government.

His further journalistic career in Vienna was characterized by maximum adaptation to the respective political currents, which earned Warrens a reputation for lack of character among his contemporaries. When he was awarded the title of Hofrat in 1866 , this led to displeasure among those circles who had come to this title through years of serious service. Over the years he took a leading position after the setting of Lloyd in the following papers: "Oesterreichische Zeitung", "Wiener Tagblatt", "Warrens' Wochenschrift für Politik und Volkswirthschaft" and " Die (old) Presse ", the forerunner of "New Free Press". Warrens was a passionate stock market speculator who lost all of his fortune several times in his life and always came to great prosperity through stock market transactions.

Warrens held a prominent position in the social life of Vienna, especially in the financial world. His pleasant and stimulating way of conducting conversations made him a much sought-after and much appreciated guest.
