Eduard Zachert

Eduard Zachert (born March 8, 1881 in Berlin , † July 22, 1943 in Berlin-Plötzensee ) was a German social democratic politician , trade unionist and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

An orphan since he was eight, Eduard Zachert learned the profession of leather worker at an early age. At the end of his military service he took part in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900 . In 1901 he was elected a post office official and in 1906 he was elected to the Berlin board of the Association of Post Office Officials. He took part in the First World War as a soldier for two years. In 1918 he became a member of the USPD . In 1920 he was imprisoned for three months because of his political activities. In the same year he was elected to the Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg district assembly. In 1922 he became a member of the SPD . From 1923 to 1925 he was a member of the Berlin city council . From 1924 to 1932 he was a member of the Prussian state parliament . In addition, he was involved in various associations of postal officials, which eventually united to form the German Postal Union . In 1933, Zachert was dismissed from the Deutsche Reichspost for political reasons .

Stumbling block for Eduard Zachert

He joined a resistance group of former SPD members. He was arrested and severely ill-treated in July 1934, but was released three months later. He then worked as an insurance agent. In October 1942, Eduard Zachert wrote to an innkeeper and warned him not to let his son become an officer. However, the innkeeper denounced him, whereupon he was arrested and sentenced to death on April 30, 1943 by the “ People's Court ” for “decomposing military strength” . He was executed on July 22, 1943 in Plötzensee prison.

Honors

In 1951 a street in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde was renamed Zachertstrasse in his honor. In 2009 a stumbling block was laid for him on Mendelssohnstrasse in Prenzlauer Berg .
