family

Zentgraf came from an old Hessian family of lawyers and pastors. His paternal grandfather, Otto Zentgraf, was President of the Darmstadt Higher Appeal Court . His father Wilhelm Zentgraf (1839-1917) was court chaplain in Schönberg, pastor in Reichenbach and Eberstadt, the mother was Marie, née Föhlisch (1854-1924). Zentgraf married Anna, nee Walther (born August 17, 1887 in Grebenau) in Darmstadt on March 8, 1913. The following children were born from the marriage:

  • Volz, Annedore, b. Zentgraf (* 1919), married in 1943 to Heinrich Volz, forest director in Gernsbach an der Murg
  • Zentgraf, Reinhard (* 1922), businessman in Lauterbach
  • Ludwig, Maria, b. Zentgraf (* 1924), kindergarten teacher, married in 1943 to Ernst Ludwig, pastor in Neu-Isenburg Darmstadt
  • Zentgraf, Hartmut (* 1927), pastor in Darmstadt

Life

After attending grammar school in Darmstadt, he studied forest science in Gießen and Munich from 1901 to 1904 . During his student days, Zentgraf joined the Christian student associations Gießener Wingolf and Munich Wingolf , and later also the Freiburg Wingolf . Heinrich Mayr's ideas of near-natural forest management were particularly influential for him . After his military service he passed the state examination for higher forest service in 1908 and then took over the management of a private forest property in Oberwolfach in the Black Forest. In 1912 he did his doctorate with Karl Wimmenauer in Gießen with a dissertation on private forest management. In 1936, Zentgraf followed a call to succeed Karl Vanselow (1879–1969) at the chair for forest production studies at the University of Giessen. In 1939 he took over the chair for silviculture at the University of Freiburg and was there director of the silviculture institute until his retirement in 1952. During the difficult war and post-war years, Zentgraf made a decisive contribution to securing forestry teaching and research in Freiburg. He was an employee and temporarily co-editor of the Allgemeine Forst - und Jagdzeitung (from 1942)

plant

Based on the fundamental knowledge that the forest should be understood as a natural plant society, whose becoming and being is shaped according to its own laws under the influence of the environment and which the forest manager has to make subservient, Zentgraf has endeavored to develop near-natural forest management. In his publications, questions of the type of farm, stock maintenance, natural regeneration, afforestation of damaged areas or mixing ratios were always in the foreground. His particular love was the silver fir, whose roots he described and whose ecological requirements he examined. In addition, Zentgraf was the most important connoisseur of foreign tree species, with which he dealt systematically and whose location requirements and wood properties he examined in order to determine the cultivation value.
