Ernst Eduard Krause , von Krause since 1881 (born June 28, 1827 in Northeim , † February 1, 1886 in Magdeburg ) was the Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of the Spandau fortress .

Life

His parents were the Rittmeister in the Hanoverian 3rd Hussar Regiment "Duke of Cambridge" Louis Krause († December 11, 1847) and his wife Luise Marie, née Chrisiani († April 8, 1842).

Career

He received his education at the grammar school in Göttingen . After graduating, under pressure from his parents, he became a student at the University of Göttingen , where he studied theology and philosophy . When the first Schleswig War loomed , he decided to join the Hanoverian army . On May 3, 1848, he became a volunteer cadet in the Hanoverian 3rd Light Brigade. From there he came on November 20, 1848 as a second lieutenant in the 2nd Infantry Regiment. In the campaign in Schleswig he took part in the battles at the Törninger mill and at Ulderup. From October 30, 1852 to May 27, 1857 he was posted to the General Staff , during which time he was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant on September 16, 1856 . On May 27, 1857 he was transferred to the General Staff. On May 24, 1870 he was transferred to the 4th Infantry Regiment as captain with a patent on June 17, 1859, but remained posted to the General Staff. On September 18, 1862 he came to the 6th Infantry Regiment, but remained in the general staff. During the mobilization for the German War he was transferred to the General Staff of the Field Army on June 17, 1866. During the war he fought in the battle of Langensalza . After the surrender of the Hanoverian Army, he said goodbye on December 31, 1866 .

He moved to the Prussian service and was posted on March 9, 1867 with Captain Pat 17 June 1859 in the General Staff aggregated and the General Command of the X. Army Corps added. Promoted to major on May 18, 1867, he was assigned to the General Staff on August 2, 1867. During the mobilization for the Franco-Prussian War he was transferred to the General Staff of the Grand Headquarters on July 18, 1870 . He fought at Gravelotte , Beaumont , Sedan and on Mont Valerian, as well as in the siege of Paris and the battles at Nouart and Malmaison. For this he received the Iron Cross II. Class on September 8, 1870 and the Iron Cross I Class on April 13, 1871. Krause was responsible for the analysis of the French troop movements and was very successful in doing so.

After the war he was transferred back to the General Staff on May 1, 1871. He was then transferred to the 15th Infantry Regiment on June 24, 1871 as battalion commander. There he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 18, 1872. On July 13, 1872, he became head of the 3rd Department and ancillary budget of the General Staff, to which he was placed à la suite of the General Staff and promoted to Colonel on September 19, 1874. On January 26, 1879, he received the Order of the Crown, Second Class. On January 20, 1880, he received the rank of brigade commander and on January 18, 1881 promoted to major general, then on February 15, 1881 he was transferred to the 14th Infantry Brigade as commander. For his achievements he was raised to the Prussian nobility on February 21, 1881. On September 19, 1883, he received the Order of the Red Eagle II. Class with Oak Leaves, and on December 12, 1885, he was transferred to the Spandau Fortress as a commandant , conferring the character of Lieutenant General.

In 1867, Colonel Ziemiesky wrote: Major Kause is one of those personalities whose value does not immediately appear when you first appear, but only becomes apparent when you become acquainted. Even if he is modest and reserved in his appearance, he is by no means lacking the necessary energy and determination to represent what has been recognized as correct with the necessary seriousness.

Krause married Anna Luise Marie Drechsler (1836–1880) on June 24, 1858 in Hanover.
