Eduard of the East

Eduard von der Osten (born September 30, 1804 in Witzmitz (Pomerania), † September 26, 1887 in Berlin ) was royal Prussian major general and most recently adjutant of the General Inspectorate of Military Education.

His parents were Christoph Henning von der Osten (* August 22, 1774; † December 1842) and his wife Dorothea Wilhelmine Schueler widowed von Bockelberg (* July 1, 1769; † April 30, 1847). His father was Herr auf Witzmitz and Muddelmow as well as a landscape delegate.

Life

He received his education at the grammar school in Stargard. After his graduation, he went on July 1, 1821 as a Ulan in the 4th Uhlan Regiment. There he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on February 17, 1823 and to Seconde-Lieutenant on May 2, 1824. He was appointed regimental adjutant on May 22, 1833, and on March 31, 1838, adjutant of the 4th Cavalry Brigade. On August 19, 1840 he was then adjutant of the 4th Division. In this position he rose to Premier-Lieutenant on February 25, 1841 and on September 28, 1847 to Rittmeister. Shortly thereafter - on October 9, 1847 - he returned to the 4th Uhlan Regiment. There he was appointed squadron chief on February 29, 1848. On June 15, 1854, he was promoted to major and appointed staff officer. He was then transferred to the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment on June 3, 1856 . There he was appointed adjutant of the General Inspectorate of Military Education and Training on January 12, 1858, and was placed à la suite of the Uhlan Regiment. Here he supported General Eduard von Peucker in reorganizing the military education system. In this position he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 31, 1859 and received the character of a colonel on October 18, 1861 , and on March 16, 1869 he received his patent as a colonel.

To his 50-years of service he was awarded the Red Eagle 2nd Class with oak leaves with 50 . On October 18, 1871, he was also awarded the Commander's Cross 2nd Class of the Saxon Order of Albrecht . On January 12, 1875, he was put up for disposal with the character of major general and a pension . On January 14, 1875, he received a premium of 1,500 marks and on September 2, 1886 another 600 marks. He died on September 26, 1887 in Berlin and was buried on September 30, 1887 in the Invalidenfriedhof.

He married Luise Klara Auguste Wilhelmine von Natzmer on November 14, 1851 in Radem (* January 15, 1833, † December 25, 1899). The couple had several children:
