from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parliamentary elections in Tuvalu in 2019 took place on September 9, 2019. There were only individual candidates since there are no political parties in Tuvalu .

The ruling faction under Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga tried to defend its absolute majority of eleven seats against the opposition with four seats.

background

All citizens over the age of 18 have the right to vote. From June 7th to July 9th, the electoral roll was open for inspection;

There were 16 seats to choose from, which are allocated according to the relative majority voting system ( first-past-the-post system ), with each of the eight electoral districts being represented with two seats each. The list of candidates was finally announced in the third week of August. As women were still underrepresented among the candidates, the government has been organizing workshops for women in the run-up to the elections since 2018. Yet only two women ran for candidates.

Election result

The polling stations were open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in previous elections. Immediately after the polling stations closed, the counting of votes in the 12 polling stations began. The incumbent Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga was re-elected with a majority of the votes of his constituency of Nukufetau . Seven MPs were elected to parliament for the first time. Of two women who ran for election, one ( Puakena Boreham ) returned to Parliament.

On September 19, 2019, Kausea Natano was elected as the new Tuvaluan Prime Minister with a majority of 10 to 6 votes.
