Parliamentary election in Tuvalu 2015
The parliamentary elections in Tuvalu in 2015 took place on March 31, 2015 after the election had already been postponed twice. There were only individual candidates since there are no political parties in Tuvalu .
Three of the 15 parliamentarians from the previous legislative period were re-elected because they ran unopposed, including incumbent Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga . He took over the post of Prime Minister on August 1, 2013 during the previous legislative term after the impeachment of his predecessor Willy Telavi . He was confirmed in this office in the 2015 election.
background
On the original election date, March 19, 2015, a large part of the population had been evacuated as a result of the March 14 emergency before Typhoon Pam. The election date, now set for March 26, had to be postponed a second time.
31 candidates, including all members of the dissolved parliament, ran for the 15 seats. Women are still underrepresented with only three candidates.
Election result
The polling stations were open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. After the polling stations closed, the counting of votes in the 12 polling stations began.
The ruling faction was able to defend its absolute majority of eleven seats against the opposition with four seats. Of the 15 previous parliamentarians who stood up, twelve were re-elected.
