career

Before going into politics, Natano was director of the Tuvalu Customs Service and also served as assistant secretary in the Ministry of Monetary and Economic Planning. Natano has been a member of the Fale i Fono since 2002 . He was one of seven members to be re-elected in the 2006 election, in which he received 340 votes. After the election, he was appointed Minister of Public Utilities and Industry in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Apisai Ielemia .

He was re-elected to parliament in the 2010 general election. He then ran for the prime ministerial election and received seven votes from the MPs, which he narrowly failed to Maatia Toafa , who received eight votes. In December 2010, Toafa's government was ousted on a motion of no-confidence and Willy Telavi was elected Prime Minister. Natano was one of Telavi's supporters, which enabled him to join the cabinet. With the appointment of his cabinet on December 24th, Natano was appointed Minister of Communications and Deputy Prime Minister.

After Prime Minister Telavi was ousted by Governor General Sir Iakoba Italeli on August 1, 2013 in the course of a political crisis (Telavi had tried to govern without the support of Parliament), Natano and the rest of the cabinet were voted out of office one day later, where the Opposition now had a clear majority. He was re-elected in the 2015 general election. After the parliamentary elections in Tuvalu in 2019 on September 19, 2019, the MPs elected Natano as Prime Minister with a 10-to-6 majority.
