Ionatana Ionatana CVO , OBE ( November 15, 1938 - December 8, 2000 ) was a Tuvaluan politician . He was Prime Minister of the country from April 27, 1999 until his death.

Ionatana has been a member of parliament since Tuvalu gained independence on October 1, 1978. In his political career he held various offices, including the post of State Secretary, Minister of Education and Minister of Labor and Communication.

On April 27, 1999, Ionatana took over the post of Prime Minister of Bikenibeu Paeniu . Tuvalu was accepted into the United Nations on September 5, 2000 during his reign .
