Edvard Herman Rodhe (born October 26, 1845 in Everöd (now part of the Kristianstad municipality ), † September 14, 1932 in Gothenburg ) was a Swedish Lutheran clergyman and politician. From 1888 to 1929 he was bishop in the diocese of Gothenburg .

Life

Rodhe grew up in a parsonage and was the fourth generation of the pastor's son. He enrolled at Lund University in 1861 . There he passed the philosophical candidate exam in 1870 and was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. He worked temporarily as an amanuensis at the university library and finished his studies with the theological candidate exam in 1877. After ordination in the same year, he worked first as an adjunct and later as a pastor at the cathedral parish in Lund . In 1881 he took up the post of chief pastor ( kyrkoherde ) in Karlshamn , where he soon also served as provost . In 1885 he became senior pastor in Norrköping ; part-time in 1886 also extraordinary court preacher .

In 1888 he was appointed bishop of the Gothenburg diocese and took office in 1890. He was particularly committed to the further training of pastors, but also to the promotion of diakonia . The foundation of the Gothenburg Deaconess House (now Bräcke diakoni ) in 1923 goes back to his commitment. Theologically he was shaped by the high church direction of the Lund faculty, but also had sympathy for the revival movement going back to Henric Schartau , which had its strongholds especially in the northern part of his diocese. On May 1, 1929, he gave up his post for reasons of age.

Rodhe, who had already been elected to the city council ( stadsfullmäktige ) of Lund in 1878 , was a member of the Second Chamber in 1892/93 and from 1894 to 1901 a member of the First Chamber of the Swedish Parliament .

family

Rodhe was married to Elisabeth Charlotta Bruhn (1852-1923) since June 20, 1873. His children include the bishop Edvard Magnus Rodhe (1878–1954) and the diplomat and Landshövding Allan Rodhe (1882–1964).

Honors

Rodhe was admitted to the Kungliga Vetenskaps- och Vitterhetssamhället i Göteborg as a member in 1889 and an honorary member in 1899 . At the jubilee celebration in 1893 he was awarded an honorary theological doctorate by the University of Uppsala . A path is named after him in the Göteborg district of Bräcke.
