Edward Alsworth Ross

Edward Alsworth Ross (born December 12, 1866 in Virden , Illinois , † July 22, 1951 in Madison , Wisconsin ) was an American sociologist.

Ross studied philosophy and economics in the USA and in Berlin in 1888/89, first becoming professor of economics at Cornell University , then professor of sociology at Stanford University , the University of Nebraska and finally, from 1906, the University of Wisconsin at the he worked for almost 30 years. Ross was the fifth president of the American Sociological Society .

Ross is one of the pioneers of the American sociologist. His socio-psychological work is about the elaboration of the control principles that are developed by groups to regulate the behavior of their members. He introduced the term social control into the scientific discussion.
