Edward Parmelee Morris

Edward Parmelee Morris (born September 17, 1853 in Auburn , New York , † November 16, 1938 in New York City ) was an American classical philologist who was mainly active at Yale University (1891-1919).

Life

Edward Parmelee Morris studied at Yale University , put there in 1874 the Bachelor's degree (B. A.), and then taught at various universities: From 1876 to 1877 Professor of Latin and history at Purdue College , from 1877 to 1879 as a professor of Latin and mathematics at Lake Forest College and Professor of Greek at Drury College from 1879 to 1884 . From 1884 to 1885 Morris took educational leave and deepened his studies in Europe at the universities of Leipzig and Jena .

After his return to the USA, Morris went to the Williams College as a professor of Latin , which had already awarded him an honorary master’s degree (M.A.) in 1884 . From there he moved to Yale University in 1891 , where he taught until his retirement in 1919 - from 1909 as Dunham Professor of Latin Literature and Language. In 1915 he was president of the American Philological Association .

In his research work, Morris has been particularly concerned with Latin syntax since he was a student in Leipzig; He also published study editions of the Plautus comedies Captivi and Trinummus (1898) and the satires and epistles of Horace (1911).

Morris received honorary degrees from Williams College (L. H. D. 1904) and Harvard University (Litt. D. 1909).
