Edwin Schwertner

Edwin Schwertner (born February 11, 1932 in Reichenberg , Czechoslovakia , † March 23, 2016 ) was a German politician. He was the office manager of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED in the GDR .

Schwertner, son of a weaver, attended elementary and high school with a high school diploma. He joined the FDJ in 1946 and the SED in 1949. From 1950 to 1953 he studied economics at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he was a research assistant and aspirant until 1958 and secretary of the SED party organization of the veterinary medicine faculty until 1960. In 1959 he was promoted to Dr. rer. oec. PhD. From 1960 he was a political employee, from 1969 sector head and from 1976 deputy head of the science department of the Central Committee of the SED .

From June 1986 to December 1989 he succeeded Gisela Glende as head of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED. Its activities ended with the resignation of the Central Committee and the Politburo on December 3, 1989. Then he placed himself in the service of the newly formed working committee of the SED. In 1971 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze and in 1982 in silver. In 1986 he was awarded the Order Banner of Labor Level I.

Schwertner died at the age of 84.
