Edwin W. Kemmerer

Edwin Walter Kemmerer (born June 29, 1875 in Scranton , Pennsylvania , † December 16, 1945 in Princeton , New Jersey ) was an American economist. He became known as an influential economic advisor to various foreign governments and was involved in the establishment of various central banks, including the Federal Reserve System .

He graduated from Wesleyan University with Honors and a Phi Beta Kappa Key and received his PhD from Cornell University , where he taught from 1906 to 1912. At age 28, he was appointed Financial Advisor to the United States Commission for the Philippines . In 1912 he became a professor at Princeton University , where he was appointed first director of the new department of international finance. At this point Kemmerer had a reputation as a so-called money doctor. Kemmerer was involved in the introduction of the Federal Reserve System in 1913. He was an economic advisor to various foreign governments ( Mexico , Guatemala, Colombia , Germany , Chile , South Africa , Poland , Ecuador , Bolivia , China , Peru and Turkey ). He campaigned for an economic policy based on strong currencies, the gold standard , a central bank and balanced national budgets . Between 1917 and 1931 he was involved in the creation or restructuring of several central banks in Latin America, including the Banco de Guatemala (1917), the Banco de la República in Colombia (1923), the Banco Central de Chile (1925), the Banco Central del Ecuador (1926) and the Banco Central de Reserva del Peru (1931). He was president of the American Economic Association in 1926 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1934 .
