Efrata (but mostly Efrat , Hebrew אפרת or אפרתה) is an Israeli settlement in the West Bank . It belongs to the Israeli district of Judea and Samaria .

location

Efrata is located south of Jerusalem on several hills, each with their own name, east of Highway 60, which connects the Palestinian towns in the West Bank. It is located on the territory of the Gush Etzion settlement block , but is an independent municipality.

history

Efrata was founded in 1980 and is named after the biblical Efrata , the second name for the nearby Bethlehem (Genesis 35:19; Micah 5,1).

At the end of 2010 Efrata had 7454 inhabitants, in 1994 the settlement had 4650 inhabitants. On December 31, 2016, the place had 8,658 inhabitants.

In December 2011, it was announced that the Ministry of Defense had approved the construction of a new hamlet outside the current built-up area of Efrata. After completion of the new development on the northern edge of Efrata in Givat Hadagan, a few hundred meters from the Dheisheh refugee camp, for which 40 single-family houses are planned, the Israeli settlements in the northern Gush Etzion block will be directly adjacent to Bethlehem's southern outskirts. In addition, the construction of a 1700 dunam farm in Givat Eitam was approved, which should ensure the future expansion of Efrata with 2500 planned new residential units. Shortly before, the construction of new residential buildings on another hill in Efrata had been approved.

In 2016, several Palestinians were arrested by the Palestinian Authority for attending the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles at the invitation of Mayor Oded Revivi . In 2017 the invitation was accepted by around 30 Palestinians from different locations. Her identity was kept secret for fear of reprisals from the PA.

A Palestinian youth stabbed the Israeli Ari Fuld (45 years old) with a knife on September 16, 2018 near the Gush-Etzion intersection. The victim lived in Efrata and is the father of four children.

Residents

The Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics gives the following population figures for Efrata in the censuses of June 4, 1983, November 4, 1995 and December 28, 2008:

Year of the census 1983 1995 2008
Number of inhabitants 207 5,300 8,167

Legal issues

The EU foreign affairs representative Catherine Ashton described the Israeli settlements in the territories occupied since 1967 as illegal under international law, Israel disagrees.

According to a report by the Israeli organization Shalom Achshaw , 29.34% of the land on which the city was built is privately owned by Palestinians . According to Israeli law, land that is privately owned by Palestinians cannot be built on. The report is criticized by the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA), which considers both the sources and the results to be questionable.
