Egbert I. (Bentheim)

Egbert I von Bentheim , also known as Egbert II von Bentheim (* March 18, 1253 , † 1311 ) was ruler in the county of Bentheim .

Life

Egbert von Bentheim was born the son of Count Otto von Bentheim and Heilwig von Tecklenburg (parents: Count Otto II. Von Tecklenburg and Heilwig von Tecklenburg). His siblings were Otto, Gertrudis , Abbess in Nottuln , and half-sister Jutta, who was married to his brother-in-law Christian von Oldenburg . In 1279 he succeeded his father as regent in Bentheim, while his brother Otto received the county of Tecklenburg - inherited from his parents in 1262. Egbert had the village of Schüttorf built and in 1295 gave it city ​​rights . He sold his bailiwick rights in Wietmarschen and donated them to the local monastery. In the sources he appears as a patron of the cities and monasteries. He was able to fully occupy himself with the administration of his county and the promotion of agriculture because the time of his reign was relatively quiet. Egbert married Heilwig von Oldenburg (1252–1295), daughter of Count Johann I of Oldenburg and Richza von Hoya (daughter of Count Heinrich von Hoya ) in 1277 . This marriage resulted in:
