Egbert Koolman

Egbert Koolman (born August 10, 1938 in Weener ; † July 17, 2015 in Oldenburg ) was a German librarian and historian .

Career

Koolman studied Middle and Modern History, German and Dutch, first at the University of Cologne , then at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . In 1969 he started with a thesis on “Community and Office. Investigations on the history of communal self-government and sovereign administrative administration in southern East Friesland " for Dr. phil. PhD . In 1965 he married Elke Wittern, with whom he had two children. Koolman was a member of the VDSt Göttingen , a founding member of the VDSt Magdeburg and an exceptional senior citizen of the VDSt Bremen . He was on the board of the Göttingen Altherrenbund and since 1970 has been the editor of the Göttinger VDSt-Nachrichten; In 1984 he published the club's history. From 1992 to 1996 he was a member of the board of the Association of German Student Associations (VVDSt). In 1987 he became chairman of the VDSter in Ostfriesland, Oldenburg and Bremen.

His work as a student assistant in the university library was ultimately decisive for his later career choice. After a stopover at the State Library and Murhard Library in Kassel , he joined the State Library of Oldenburg in 1974 as deputy director , of which he was director from 1988 to 2003.

As deputy library manager, he largely planned and organized the relocation of the state library to the current building on the horse market in the 1980s. During his tenure as director, the famous illuminated manuscript of the Sachsenspiegel returned to Oldenburg, as well as the start of the online catalog of the Oldenburg academic libraries. Koolman wrote numerous publications on library history and regional history and worked on the Oldenburg Bibliography . He was a member of the historical commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen , in the advisory board and in the working group regional history of the Oldenburg landscape as well as in the advisory board of the Oldenburger Landesverein and co-editor of the Oldenburg research (new series). Egbert Koolman was a legal knight of the Order of St. John. Among other things, he recorded the archive of the Hanoverian Cooperative of the Order of St. John. This can be viewed today under the conditions of the Lower Saxony Archives Act at the Hanover location of the Lower Saxony State Archives.

Awards

In 2005 Egbert Koolman was awarded the Landscape Medal of the Oldenburg Landscape , which is awarded for services to culture and science in the Oldenburg region.
