Although the Egelsee , also written as Ägelsee , is hardly bigger than a pond , it is considered to be the largest natural lake in the canton of Aargau ( Switzerland ). It is known as a popular local recreation area for the Mutschellen and Limmattal region .

Lots of people, especially young residents, bathe and grill here, especially on the weekends. There is also a small diving platform (approx. 3 m) on the southeast bank.

location

The small lake is located in a dense beech forest on the eastern flank of the Heitersberg between the Limmat and Reuss valleys at 667  m above sea level. M. in the municipality of Bergdietikon . On the west bank it goes very steeply up to the almost 800 m high Heitersbergkrete.

The lake can only be reached on foot or by bike. The next train station Berikon - Widen on the Mutschellenpass is around 90 minutes' walk away. The entire area is well developed with hiking trails.

Emergence

The lake was formed at the end of the last ice age and used to be almost three times as big. The former southern part of the lake has silted up and a dense reed / swamp area has developed.

Special

Because of the fairytale location in a dark beech forest, there are many stories and legends about the lake. A legend tells that the ruins of an old knight's castle were on the lake bottom. Many people have already drowned in the dark water and the corpses were often swallowed up by the bog soil forever. The Egelsee-Wälleflüehau natural forest reserve is located on the Egelsee .
