The prize is named after Johannes von Tepl , who came from the Egerland and whose work “ Der Ackermann von Böhmen ”, written around 1400, is the oldest prose poem in New High German literature and is considered one of the most important works of Early New High German . The prize was donated by the Association of Egerland Municipalities (BdEG), the Egerland Cultural Workers Association (AEK) and the Egerland Landscape Council.

Since 1997 promotional prizes have also been awarded. Since then, the Johannes von Tepl Prize has consisted of a main prize and one or more sponsorship prizes. The latter are awarded to groups or individuals who are not older than 35 years. The prize money of the sponsorship awards is financed by donations and depends on the corresponding donations.
