The Ehlbeck is a river or Heidebach in the Lüneburg Heath in northeast Lower Saxony . It is a left tributary of the Lopau .
course
The Ehlbeck rises on the northern edge of the Munster-Nord military training area, in the Uhlenbusch forest west of the Rehrhof . In the headwaters, there are fish ponds that date back to the Middle Ages and are now largely silted up, from where it flows through the village of Ehlbeck , to which it gave its name. Rehrhof and Ehlbeck are districts of Rehlingen ( Lüneburg district ). The Ehlbeck flows into the Lopau on the left at Bockum (municipality of Rehlingen), which flows into the Luhe after a further course of about seven kilometers . With a total length of 8.9 kilometers, the Ehlbeck is the most important tributary of the Lopau, whose water flow it doubles at the confluence. Its above-ground catchment area of almost 35 square kilometers slightly exceeds that of the Lopau at its mouth.
Geology and water quality
The headwaters of the still largely natural Ehlbeck lies in a system of dry valleys with boggy beds, which is sunk into a sandy-gravelly terminal moraine ridge of the Hohe Heide , the main ridge of the Lüneburg Heath. The water of the upper reaches is colored brown by humic acids from the bog soil and has a pH value of only 4.7. The water quality in this area is qualified as moderately polluted . Below Ehlbeck, water quality and biodiversity increase significantly up to the confluence with the Lopau.
Prehistoric times
The catchment area of the Ehlbeck has been settled since the Neolithic Age, as documented by excavations of barrows with finds of flint daggers. The finds from the Bronze Age (1800–800 BC) include bronze brooches, neck, arm and leg rings and gold spirals.
