Eichwald, MP is a German comedy - TV series about the fictional members of parliament (MP) Hans-Josef "Hajo" Eichwald and his staff. In 2014, the first four episodes of the series were shot on behalf of ZDF- “ Das kleine Fernsehspiel ” and ZDFneo , the first episode was broadcast on April 16, 2015, and the other three episodes were made available in the ZDF media library on the same day . The takeover into the main program was announced for May 29, 2015, there the series ran after the show today . A second season was broadcast on ZDF in June and July 2019.

action

Hans-Josef Eichwald (56) has been a member of the Bundestag for 30 years. In the aftermath , he doesn't miss a fool , which is why he has to justify himself to his parliamentary group leader Birgit Hanke (55) every now and then. With Berndt Engemann (58) and Sebastian Grube (29) he has two research assistants at his side, his office manager is Julia Schleicher (27).

In the first episode, Eichwald comes from the funeral of an unloved party colleague, but then finds out that the much younger Uwe Bornsen (36) moves into the Bundestag via the list . Bornsen comes from the same constituency as Eichwald. Since Eichwald fears for his direct mandate , he tries to appear in a better light than Bornsen. For example, Eichwald tries to put shock images on fast food packaging (similar to cigarette warnings ), to save a company threatened with bankruptcy in his constituency , or to introduce a food traffic light. Eichwald hangs behind Bornsen or is used by his parliamentary group chairman as a stirrup for other legislative projects. In the last episode of the first season, he is suspected of having had sexual intercourse in a brothel during the committee trip to Brazil over the weekend . In his suitcase he finds a bill that says "Serviços Diversos" at US $ 361.50 next to the drinks. As a result, his team tries its hand at crisis management while they secretly apply for a job at Bornsen if Eichwald has to resign. When the server is working again with the calls from the weekend, they discover a call from Eichwald, who talks in it for two hours in a drunk state and thus exempts himself from the accusation. The high cost was not for sexual services, but for the phone call to Germany. At the last second they can prevent Eichwald from submitting his resignation.

In the second season, Eichwald managed to move into the Bundestag again, but only by a narrow margin over his two competitors, a right-wing populist YouTuber and a convicted stalker. Julia Schleicher goes on baby vacation and is then replaced by a second Julia, who is the daughter of a sausage manufacturer from Eichwald's constituency. A power struggle quickly developed between her and Sebastian Grube, as a result of which he was demoted to the post of office manager. Meanwhile, Berndt has taken on the sponsorship of a Syrian refugee, which, however, is increasingly burdening his marriage. Bornsen, on the other hand, tried, on Eichwald's advice, to deal with the accidental death of his wife by writing and thus became a bestselling author.

During the season, Eichwald found himself embroiled in a doping scandal in German football. After first calling for an investigative committee, however, he quickly found that he was involved in this himself through his former post as State Secretary in North Rhine-Westphalia. When he was summoned as a witness before the committee, Georg Berger, now party chairman but then Prime Minister, and thus actually responsible for the scandal, made him an offer for a post if Eichwald took over responsibility. Hanke, who wants to replace Berger, makes him a counter-offer in a less subtle way. After Eichwald Berger covers, Hanke leaks information that incriminates Berger and then takes over the party chairmanship.

At the same time, Sebastian Grube begins to get involved in an eco-alternative party in the hope of replacing the subdistrict group chairman. But soon Julia Schleicher, also concerned about her future in Eichwald's office, joins the group and the two begin another power struggle.

Finally Eichwald goes back to Bochum to answer to his party colleagues. In the plenum, Eichwald gave a passionate, apparently improvised speech about the constraints of the political apparatus, which turned out later than planned. However, the board of directors informed Eichwald that they would like to continue working with him, but that he should pull Julia Zwei up as his successor. In addition, Eichwald is confronted with a preliminary cancer diagnosis.

In the last episode, Eichwald is accidentally taken hostage after a night of partying. A citizen of the Reich holds him and a group of demented seniors prisoner in a gym. Eichwald, now clearly fatalistic, confirms the hostage taker's wild conspiracy theories and begins to entertain the senior citizens, but plans the outbreak at the same time. In the meantime, however, he receives the information that the cancer diagnosis was a wrong one. The breakout finally succeeds after the hostage taker, increasingly annoyed by the fact that his demands on Eichwald's broken cell phone are constantly interrupted, accidentally drops his weapon and then knocks himself out. Eichwald is then celebrated as a hero and the chairman of the local group offers him to revise the previous decision.

background

  • Although Eichwald's party is deliberately not mentioned in the series, the posters shown in the intro are reminiscent of the SPD .
  • Eichwald's constituency is Bochum II , which is considered an SPD stronghold.
  • The series was funded by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg .
  • At the beginning and the end of the episodes, the message “supported by production assistance ” can be seen. Products were made available by the car manufacturer Opel and the furniture manufacturers Thonet and Wilkhahn .
  • In the case of media, their names have sometimes been left out or alienated, and sometimes there is also a reference to real media. In episode 1, Julia clicks through manipulated websites of the Tagesschau and Spiegel Online , where their names have been removed. In episode 4, a boulevard website shows a photo of Eichwald in the Brazilian brothel. The website looks like bild.de, but instead of “ BILD ” you can see “NEWS” in large white letters. In contrast, Eichwald receives “Post from Wagner ” in episode 1 , in episode 2 he is interviewed by a BILD reporter and in episode 3 the parliamentary group leader Hanke can be seen in a press conference on Phoenix .
  • Sebastian Grube stands out in the series through the intensive use of social networks. In fact, he has a fictitious Twitter account.
  • In addition to the series, there are seven so-called " webisodes ". The clips, which are less than 3 minutes long, show how Hans-Josef Eichwald discusses a topic with Berndt Engemann and Sebastian Grube in the car.
  • The DVD with all four episodes was released on June 12, 2015.

Reviews

“The humor works because it was developed from the amiable naive characters (anything but Francis Underwood) and is casually played down by very good actors. The only weakness of this short series about mediocrity in made-to-measure suits is that one only thinks from joke to joke, that is, the plot is constantly being zeroed instead of constructing larger arcs. "

- Oliver Junge : FAZ

“The message - it's the system, not the staff - unfortunately gets lost in the parting of biting slogans. In the end, Eichwald is just a poor sausage. [...] But one would have loved to see what a satirical look behind the scenes of politics looks like, which in the end, as the makers announce, actually awakens more understanding for our parliamentarians. "

- Christian Meier : The world

“Eichwald, Member of the Bundestag for The Thick of It and Veep , is 'inspired' , writes ZDF in the press kit for the series. That is a thorough understatement, however. From the gray images to the always slightly shaky camera to the cuts in the credits, Eichwald, Member of the Bundestag, copied exactly the imagery of the role models. And the figures in the German version are also closely based on the models of the British original. "
