action

The end of the holiday season on the Black Sea : At night the couple Kraskow and Vera wake up to a noise in the extension of their holiday home. Kraskow surprises the couple Soja and Tolja, who have fled the rain and so far have not been able to find a room in the village. Both are allowed to stay and the couples get to know each other better the next morning. The youngsters Soja and Tolya are together against the will of their parents, as Tolya is considered unreliable and not very determined. He has already lost his job three times in the past two years. Tolja is always jealous and thus causes strife in the relationship. Kraskow and Vera, on the other hand, seem to be the perfect couple. They treat each other lovingly and harmoniously, play cards together at night and seem to have no more secrets from each other over the years. Vera and Soja and Kraskow and Tolja become friends, the women visit the hairdresser together and have strange hairstyles done, and the men go shopping and to the amusement arcade. In disbelief, both couples marvel at an umbrella for lovers in the window of a bridal shop, which has one handle but two umbrellas that merge into one another. When Kraskow and Vera end their vacation, they leave Soja and Tolja to stay for another month. The young couple, in turn, wants to take an example from the older one and make the relationship more harmonious.

Kraskow and Vera are actually colleagues and secret lovers. Both split up on the train and get off from different compartments when they arrive in Moscow : Kraskov is expected by his wife and three children, while Vera is picked up from the platform by her mother. Both work in a clinic that deals with the treatment of alcoholics. Kraskow also has a program on television that presents the results of the clinic's work, so that he is publicly known and meetings with Vera can therefore only take place in secret. Vera is increasingly suffering from the situation, but knows that Kraskow cannot give up his marriage because of his children. When she is courted by her colleague Yuri Dalilowitsch and Kraskow tells her about the advantages of her colleague, she breaks with him and tries to avoid him. Kraskow, in turn, suffers from the separation from Vera, speaks to her on the street and wants a reconciliation, but Vera yells at him not to torment her any further.

Shortly before New Year's Eve , Vera receives a telegram from Soja in which she and Tolya announce themselves to the couple as a surprise for the New Year's party. Vera sits down with Kraskow and both decide to keep the facade up. They find accommodation in Vera's friend Lida, Kraskow borrows Dalilowitsch's car and pretends to have to work over New Year's Eve in front of his wife. Vera and Kraskow pick up Soja and Tolja from the train station and spend a lively New Year's Eve. Soja is pregnant, she and Tolja have married and align their relationship with the values of Vera and Kraskow. They told all their relatives about the perfect partnership between the two and invite them to join them. At the end, Soja and Tolja give Vera and Kraskow the umbrella for lovers. The New Year's Day brings a call from Kraskow at his wife, who suspects that her husband is cheating on her. The couples say goodbye. Soja and Tolja leave on the train and Vera and Kraskow stay behind and look at each other helplessly.
