A summer sand dream (original title: The Sandman ) is a Swiss feature film from 2011. The premiere was at the film festival Max Ophüls Preis 2011, where the film won the audience award. The cinema release in Germany was on July 21, 2011.

Benno, who doesn't particularly like his unconventional neighbor Sandra, has to struggle with sand suddenly trickling out of his body. Benno works in a stamp shop, but is a talented musician who failed at a young age. Sandra runs the café under his apartment and in the evenings after the shop closes for a performance as a solo artist, which bothers Benno when he falls asleep. As often as he complains to Sandra, she doesn't care about his problems and a real guerrilla war breaks out between them. They insult each other wherever they can.

The sand that trickles out of Benno and which he cannot explain to himself is sleeping sand - if you smell it, you fall into a kind of lucid dream . In this dream, Benno and Sandra are a couple, although Benno is actually with Patrizia. Benno also loses weight through the gravel, which is why he see a doctor. However, he cannot find anything unusual and even a therapist considers it to be imaginary. He does not tell his friend Patrizia his problem and when she visits him again one evening and they eat together, she discovers the strange sand and smells it. She falls asleep immediately and seems to be dreaming pleasantly. When he doesn't know what to do, he confides in Sandra, of all people, and lets her smell the sand to test its effectiveness. Sandra begins to dream like Benno. They talk about it and think the idea of ​​being a couple is absolutely absurd. Therefore Benno contacts a fortune teller and healer, but without success. After his boss in the stamp shop repeatedly discovered "dirty" sand in the shop and found out that it came from Benno, he fired him and threw him out of the shop. In revenge, Benno forces his boss to smell the sand, whereupon he immediately falls into a deep sleep.

Benno's floor in his apartment is now covered by a thick layer of sand because he has given up removing it. He has got a new job in a bookstore and is beginning to harness the power of sand by letting the shop's customers fall asleep in rows. He proceeds in a similar way for each of his now very frequently changing jobs. While that pleases him, it doesn't solve his main problem. When his weight loss reaches threatening proportions, he again confides in Sandra. With their help, he finds out that when he is dishonest he always starts to trickle in sand; if he tells the truth, no sand falls.

Benno decides to only tell the truth, as he is already so weakened by the weight loss that he can no longer afford to lose any more sand and thus substance. He is forced to confess to his former boss that he has embezzled a valuable stamp. He no longer compliments his girlfriend and when asked if he would really love her, he can only answer no , which ends their relationship. In desperation, he contacts the fortune teller again, who lets him know that the solution is to be found in his dreams. Then he dreams his way through life for half the day. Here he meets Sandra again and again and Sandra seems to have the same dreams. So they try to come up with the solution to his problem together and hope that it could have something to do with music. Sandra is supposed to sing Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony for Benno and so he practices with her, which is actually not "at home" in classical music. But it doesn't want to work. Benno is now sinking into the sand that has accumulated in his home and does not stop trickling out of his body. Completely exhausted, he drags himself to Sandra and ruffles completely in front of her door. Without a word, Sandra takes his clothes, sweeps up the remaining sand and smells it. In her dream Sandra sings, accompanied by an orchestra conducted by Benno.

When Sandra wakes up from her dream, she and Benno are lying on the floor of their café.

[...] Because as the plot becomes more and more complicated, Luisi takes a lot of its initial mysteriousness from the summer sand dream, and the humor becomes more and more clumsy towards the end. In the end, one or the other viewer might feel a little like Benno's perplexed psychiatrist. You really don't know what to do with this film. "
