action

The brothers Francesco and Paolo Palumbo live with their mother Elena (the father has deceased) on the rural property in Tuscany, which they manage themselves with a servant couple. The area is the property of the wealthy building contractor Roberto De Micheli, whose daughter Angela has been disturbed since her mother's death. Since they refuse to do so despite a lot of money and numerous conversations, De Micheli - he cannot build a large settlement because of their attitude - is affectionate to the Palumbos with warm enmity, which intensifies when Paolo and Angela fall in love. Meanwhile, tired of work and subordination to his older brother, Paolo has become a police officer and is killed by contract killers on De Micheli's orders when he discovers smuggled love letters. It looks like an accident, but Elena Palumbo dies of a broken heart, Angela goes mad and Francesco, who doesn't believe it was an accident, goes to town to avenge his brother's death. When he knows the culprit, the police do not support him due to a lack of evidence. He takes the law into his own hands, is successful and ends up in prison.

criticism

The film viewers, who are set on tougher fare because of the title, perceive the film as a “musty and boring family drama”, says Michael Cholewa. and adds: "The friendliness of the peasant family is so exaggeratedly polite and understanding that one is waiting for when this [...] idyll will finally be destroyed." In contrast, the Segnalazioni Cinematografiche saw their own, if not entirely new, style, the simple one Story to tell. The work is reminiscent of old films by Raffaello Matarazzo .

Remarks

Film daughter Angela is the biological daughter of her father's actor and the actress of her lover's mother.
