A machine is a solo album by the German rapper David Asphalt . It was released on October 8, 2010 on the Wolfpack Entertainment label in collaboration with Universal Music Group .
concept
The album was divided into three concept parts, One Machine , Save the World and The Lawn Mower Man . On Eine Maschine there were mainly songs that stylistically can be assigned to battle rap . The attempt is made to verbally insult and eliminate an imaginary opponent as well as possible. The second part, save the world , which will be published in advance as a free download , dealt mainly with summer topics. The last, concluding part, The Lawnmower Man , mainly contained texts with depth and more personal content.

The cover of the album is an analogy to the drawing The Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci . In contrast to the original, however, a machine is not shown, rather than a person. To the left and right of the body of the machine are the words David Asphalt and Eine Maschine in cursive . These are also visible above and below the image.
The artwork was designed by Alexej Ksey Buss, Cha-wen Kuo was responsible for the booklet and layout.
Guest Posts
A total of three guest contributions, so-called features , are represented on the album . A verse by Chakuza can be heard on Ground Zero . In addition, Patrick Enemy and Rock Toxin, both of whom are part of David Asphalt's rap formation Asphaltliteraten , appear on the titles The Same Game and Electric Air, respectively. Additional vocals from the singer Eveleen can be heard on the track Ground Zero . However, it is not listed as a guest post, but is listed as an additional vocal .
production
Most of the production was done by the Kaiserslautern producer group 83 Sound . They showed up for all beats with two exceptions . The title World Save was produced by the Düsseldorf producer duo Trommelfellaz , which consists of Benz Reibach and DJ Cebu. The beat for How Time Flies so quickly was contributed by Chakuza and DJ Stickle , who together make up Beatlefield .
Most of Eine Maschine was recorded and mixed by Benz Reibach, part of the Trommelfellaz , in the BilkBass studio . The recording and mixing of the tracks Intro , A machine , Thanks for talking to us , What are you waiting for? and Karma was done by OC at OCBeats Studios . Chakuza's part and Eveleen's vocals on Ground Zero were recorded in the Stahlstadt-Studio in Linz and mixed by Benz Reibach. The guest contributions by Patrick Enemy and Rock Toxin were recorded and mixed by AmoCloud in the Blk-Amok Studio . Benz Reibach took on the complete mastering .
marketing
Two videos were shot for the album . The song Save the World was filmed by Fuchs-Film in early September . Another music video appeared shortly before the album release for the title track Eine Maschine . The director was again directed by Fuchs-Film .
On September 10th, the online platform hiphop.de published the album part Welt rten , which contains the eight titles Welt save , Wellen (Skit) , Electric Air , Birds (Skit) , Blue Steel , Twilight (Interlude) , Schnaps and Never Again ( Skit) as a free download.
criticism
The online platform rappers.in rated the album with three out of six microphones. In the corresponding review, the author particularly praised the sophisticated flow that David Asphalt uses in his songs, as well as Asphalt's rap technique. This is annoying in the long run, however, because it is always the same and "the entire album sounds exactly the same on the last track as on the first". The "flat battle trophies" were also mentioned negatively. On the other hand, the thematic songs were praised, especially Karma because of the theme and the perfect combination of flow, beat, voice, song and rap . With these two columns of lyrics the album lacks a common thread. In summary, a machine was rated as solid and safe, but also as conceptless and varied.
The website hiphopholic rated the album with three out of six stars in the categories of texts, productions and overall impression. The first half of the album was described as a monotonous part with unspectacular beats. However, the middle and the end were praised by the author. "Towards the middle it then picks up speed again and convinces either with successful instrumentalisation ('Blauer Stahl') or textual variety like on 'Schnaps'." So a machine is convincing more and more and reaches its absolute climax in the excellent Der lawnmower man . With How time flies so quickly and Wenn I write there are two more tracks that deserve a good note lyrically and musically. All in all, the debut album was described as solid, with a variety of content. However, David Asphalt as a rapper is "at best an average figure".
The black music magazine Rhyme awarded one machine three out of a possible six stars. The biggest point of criticism was mentioned that there was "nothing new on the album, neither thematically nor in terms of skills and flows". In contrast, the productions were very successful. In addition, the potential of David Asphalt can be seen in places. Rhyme concluded: "Had 'A Machine' been released sometime in the 1990s, David Asphalt would certainly have made a big hit with it, but in 2010 there is nothing on the album that has not been heard somehow before."
The online platform Rap4Fame awarded the sound carrier three stars out of a maximum of five. It was said that David Asphalt used relatively simple rhymes and did not attract attention with complex rhymes, but limited himself to the essentials. However, this should not be rated negatively as it loosens the atmosphere of the album. Overall, the album was rated well, although individual songs fall out of the ordinary and thus significantly worsen the overall impression. In the author's opinion, fewer songs would have been better.
