historical development

Company sports community unit

When sports in the GDR was reorganized in the form of company sports associations (BSG) between 1949 and 1951 , athletes from the Wernigerode district of Hasserode founded the BSG unit Wernigerode. The name "unit" indicates that the sports community was sponsored by the city's state administrative institutions. The initially 170 members had organized themselves into the sections football, handball, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics and winter sports. Sports such as cycling, swimming and volleyball were added later. The number of members grew to over 500 by the 1970s.

Football in the GDR

In the course of time, the BSG was mainly perceived by the public through its soccer team. It took 16 years before the BSG unit, which had started in the 2nd district class in Wernigerode in 1951, was promoted to the third-class district league in 1967. Before that, she was able to adorn herself with the title of district cup winner in 1957 and that of district cup winner in 1962. 1975 unit was Magdeburg district champion and qualified for the second-rate GDR league . Here she was able to keep her 6th place in the season C of twelve in the 1975/76 season as a newcomer and even came in third a year later. After that, the team had apparently reached the zenith of their performance, because in the following years it was only just enough to stay in the league (1978 8th, 1979 7th). When after the 1979/80 season only 10th place could be occupied, that meant relegation back to the district league. However, the team succeeded in the immediate resurgence, and then they could play again for three seasons in the second highest division until they fell victim to the reduction of the GDR league to two seasons in 1984. The 8th place was not enough for the 1984/85 season, so the way back to the district league had to be started. Unit Wernigerode remained there until the end of the GDR football game operations. Although the team became district champions again in 1988 and 1989, they could not assert themselves in the promotion rounds.

Football club unity

After the upheavals of the political and economic turnaround in 1989 , the company sports community no longer received funding from the public authorities and the BSG unit was given the new name Harzer Sportverein. However, members of the soccer department founded FC Einheit 1990 Wernigerode as an independent registered club . With the introduction of the DFB game operation in East Germany, FC Einheit was incorporated into the Association League Saxony-Anhalt. After third place in the 1990/91 season, Einheit was a year later Saxony-Anhalt champion and rose to the third-class Oberliga Nordost. After two 11th places, the club merged with Germania Wernigerode (formerly BSG Motor) in 1994 to form 1. FC Wernigerode. The new football club was also able to maintain its position in the league for two more years, but 13th place after the 1995/96 season meant relegation back to the association league. In the following two years the 5th place in the association league was achieved.

Internal disagreements and the worsening financial situation led to the fact that on May 6, 1998, players of the third team of 1. FC Wernigerode founded the FC Einheit Wernigerode in the restaurant "Hasseröder Hof". Therefore, the new club had to start athletically in the Wernigerode district class. At the same time, 1. FC Wernigerode had such financial difficulties in 2002 due to mismanagement and a lack of public acceptance that it was dissolved in the course of insolvency proceedings . The FC unit completed a march through to the national league within four years. In 2004 he was promoted to the Association League Saxony-Anhalt , which could not be held. Immediate relegation followed, and it was not until the 2008/09 season that he was promoted back to the association league. After only one year, the club had to relegate again to the state league.

FC Einheit is currently renovating its stadium step by step. This stadium is a pure football stadium with a capacity of approx. 4000 people. In September 2015, the old asphalt winter training field was replaced by a new artificial turf training field (small field). The covered grandstand built in 1976 had to be demolished in November 2016. The lease agreement for the property on which the grandstand partially stood has been terminated. At the beginning of May 2018, the foundation stone was laid for a new, modern functional building on Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse. The lawn was drained in June 2018 and will be completely redesigned for this purpose. All spectator traverses will also be renewed in the course of this. In the long term, FC Einheit is also aiming to renovate a second sports facility "Alte Försterei" on Bielsteinchaussee.

people

The unit footballers had their best days in the 1970s and 1980s. During this time, players ran through the team that before or later belonged to the elite of GDR football or at least played in the upper league :
