Iceagogue tou nomou

The Eisagogē tou nomou ( Greek  Εἰσαγωγὴ τοῦ νόμου = introduction to the law, formerly incorrectly "Epanagogē") is a Middle Byzantine code of law .

The Eisagogē is a code of law of the Byzantine emperors Basil I , Leon VI, divided into 40 titles . and Alexandros , believed to have been promulgated on May 15, 886 . As Joachim Scharf first demonstrated, the spiritus rector of the elaboration was the Patriarch Photios , who wrote the theological Prooimion and the famous titles 2 and 3 on the emperor and the patriarch ( doctrine of two powers ).

The purpose of the Eisagogē was to introduce the comprehensive legislative work of the (later so-called) basilicas and the Eklogē tōn nomōn of the " Isaurian " emperor Leon III. and to replace Constantine V. The most important source of the work, which covers almost all areas of law , is the Corpus iuris civilis , the provisions of which, however, have often been modified or falsified; In the criminal part, the Eklogē tōn nomōn also served as a template.

The Eisagogē was abrogated shortly after its promulgation and replaced by the institutional paraphrase of Theophilos (Antecessor) , until the Procheiros nomos took its place two decades later . Nevertheless, many of its provisions were also found in other legal books, such as the Eisagogē cum Prochiro composita , the Eisagogē aucta and the Syntagma kata stoicheion of Matthaios Blastares . Comprehensive scholias, sometimes critical of the text, have survived on the statute book, which has survived in only a few manuscripts.
