Traffic significance

As part of the construction of the Main-Rhine Railway by the Hessian Ludwig Railway from Mainz via Darmstadt to Aschaffenburg , the Main had to be crossed shortly before the destination station. The bridge required there and the Mainz south bridge were the only complex engineering structures that had to be built for the route. They were therefore the ones that were last completed, the Mainz Südbrücke not even until 1862.

First bridge

The bridge was built from red sandstone with nine arches on ten pillars by the Mainz contractor Christian Lothary from 1856 . While the first section of the line was opened to public transport on August 1, 1858, the "Capstone Festival" of the Stockstadt railway bridge could not be celebrated until August 21, 1858. The former King Ludwig I of Bavaria and his daughter Mathilde , who lived with the reigning Grand Duke of Hesse, Ludwig III, were present. , was married. A first test train drove from Aschaffenburg to Dieburg on October 30, 1858, and thus also over the Stockstadt railway bridge. On November 2, 1858, the Mainz – Aschaffenburg line was used continuously for the first time by a test train in which the Bavarian Minister Ludwig von der Pfordten was also sitting. Freight traffic was started on November 15, 1858, passenger traffic on December 25, 1858. The Stockstadt railway bridge had cost 420,000 guilders .

The existing 211 meter long bridge, which finally replaced the destroyed one, was handed over on December 1, 1955. It cost 3 million DM and uses some of the historic red sandstone pillars of the first bridge that have been renovated with concrete . The main opening of the new bridge consists of a steel arched bridge spanning 69 meters , which is connected to three openings on both sides, which are designed as steel beams with two box girders below. In the eastern floodplain there is also a single-arched receiving water bridge. The bridge is part of the route of the industrial culture Rhine-Main Bavarian Lower Main .

In mid-February 2019, Deutsche Bahn announced that parts of the bridge could not be repaired, but would have to be rebuilt. The plan is to replace the two fore bridges on the respective banks with new bridges between July 13 and August 19, 2019, while the central section can remain standing over the river. The bicycle and pedestrian path is to be widened to 2.50 meters.
