Sarhad railway accident
The railway accident at Sarhad was the collision of three long-distance trains on 12 July 2005 on the railway Karachi-Lahore in Station Sarhad province of Sindh in southern Pakistan . 137 people were killed.
Starting position
The Quetta Express to Quetta pulled into Sarhad train station at around 4:00 a.m. and stopped there for 25 minutes due to a technical problem. The train should have been secured against the following trains by blocking the track on which it was standing for the entry of another train and routing the following trains through a passing track. However, that was precisely what did not happen due to a signal interference based on a programming error. The automatic system also blocked attempts by the dispatcher to set the route accordingly by hand.
the accident
The Quetta Express was followed by the Karachi Express from Lahore to Karachi . Whose engine driver was due to signal interference, the entry signal of the station, a light signal , a green light, so "ride free". The Karachi Express then drove into the station and on the Quetta Express standing there . Cars overturned, three of them on the neighboring track for traffic in the opposite direction, into which the Tezgam Express from Karachi entered and the overturned cars entered. He was on his way to Rawalpindi .
In the first reports about the accident it was mentioned that the train driver of the Karachi Express who was killed in the accident had misread a signal, which however turned out to be incorrect in the course of the following accident investigation.
consequences
16 cars were smashed in the accident, 12 of the Quetta Express , three of the Tezgam Express and one of the Karachi Express . Of the total of around 2,000 people on the trains, 137 were killed, including the locomotive crew of the Karachi Express and at least 176 seriously injured.
A number of senior Pakistani railway employees responsible for signaling were suspended after the accident .
