breeding

'Elbflorenz' was bred at the Meilland-Richardier Research Center in Le Cannet-des-Maures (France). The rose variety 'Elbflorenz' is the result of a cross between the parents 'Aachener Dom' × ('Louis de Funès' × 'Graham Thomas' ).

description

'Elbflorenz' grows as an upright shrub that only branches out with age and reaches heights of up to 120 centimeters. The branches are heavily spiked . The rose can sometimes develop excessively long stem axes and is only mediocre in appearance when cultivated in a container . It has relatively large, green to dark green leaves .

'Elbflorenz' is more frequent, beginning in May or June. One to four flowers are formed per stem . The double flowers , in the style of old rose varieties or in the shape of a peony , are medium-sized with a diameter of 9 to 10 centimeters. The petals are firm and therefore rainproof and have a dusky pink , rose- red or fuchsia-red color, often with a thin, light border. The edges are occasionally notched or wavy, the inner petals whisked or quartered.

Their mixture of fragrance and leaf health was described as rare by Andreas Barlage. The strongly pronounced scent consists of fresh, fruity citrus , raspberry and apricot notes and the scent of the old Damascus roses ( Rosa × damascena ).

Location in the garden or park and suitable as a cut flower

Bauer and Grothe recommend planting 'Elbflorenz' in small groups and, because of the scent, near seats. Barlage suggests combining 'Elbflorenz' in the garden with vanilla flowers , beach silverweed and trumpet lilies . Bauer and Grothe recommend a combination with varieties of Mallow ( Lavatera trimestris ). 'Elbflorenz' can be used as cut flowers for a week.

Awards

'Elbflorenz' won several rose awards from 2005 to 2009 - starting with the Coupe du parfum (fragrance award) at the rose competition in the Parc de Bagatelle in France. In 2007 the rose variety 'Elbflorenz' was chosen as an ADR rose . Other outstanding awards are the first prize at the Rose competition from Lion in 2006, the Golden Rose of Hradec Králové in 2007, a silver medal and the prize for the best Duftrose at the Australian National Rose Trials in 2008 and in 2009 the Grand Prix de la Rose in all categories of the Société nationale d'horticulture de France . In 2009, the 'Elbflorenz' variety was recognized as the Gold Standard for roses introduced in Great Britain .
