Eleanor Laing
Eleanor Laing (born February 1, 1958 in Paisley , Renfrewshire ) is a British politician and member of the British House of Commons . It belongs to the Conservative Party and represents the House of Commons since the British general election, 1997 election district Epping Forest of the county Essex .
Laing has been Deputy Speaker since 2013 and thus one of the deputies of Speaker John Bercow . She unsuccessfully applied for his successor in the election as Speaker of the House of Commons 2019 .
biography
Laing was born Eleanor Fulton Pritchard in Paisley and grew up in Elderslie , Scotland , where her father was a local politician.
She studied law at the University of Edinburgh , where she was the first woman to be elected President of the Student Union. Laing then worked as a lawyer in Edinburgh . She was also the chair of the Society of Conservative Lawyers .
Eleanor Laing has been a MP for Epping Forest since 1997 . She was the unsuccessful candidate of her party for the constituency of Paisley North in the course of the British general election in 1987 . In the shadow cabinet by Michael Howard Laing served as Shadow Minister for Women and Equality of 2004 by 2005. From March to December 2005 she was shadow minister for Scotland. In October 2013, Laing was elected one of the Deputy Speakers of the House of Commons. She thus succeeded Nigel Evans .
Laing has a son who was born shortly after the 2001 British general election . She is a supporter of the Glasgow Rangers football club .
