It is conceptually a revision of the draft of the NATO research vessel Alliance . The main task of Elettra is the strategic acquisition of information . This ship has numerous special sensors for this purpose.
description
The Elettra has 27 different sensors for evaluating acoustic and electromagnetic signals . In addition, drones can be controlled from on board. In addition to the standard crew of 30, up to 65 technicians can be added for these tasks. Furthermore, a submarine is available for hydrographic and oceanographic purposes with a diving depth of up to 1000 m.
The ship has a diesel-electric drive . It consists of two diesel generators Grandi Motori Trieste Wärtsilä CW12-V-200 with 2,785 kW and two electric motors with permanent magnet MEMP from ABB with 1,500 kW each. This type of propulsion is normally chosen for submarines and the Elettra is the first ship to be equipped with it. That is why it has a reduced acoustic signature. The armament consists of two automatic cannons Oto Melara KBA 25 mm.
history
The ship was named after Elettra , the "Funkyacht" ( research ship ) of the physicist Guglielmo Marconi with whom he carried out scientific experiments on radio waves and radio transmissions from 1919 to 1936. Godmother was the daughter of the physicist Elettra Marconi.
The NRV Alliance , the type ship of the class that was launched in 1986, was also used for marine and underwater research. The experiences that were made with this ship eventually led to the construction of the Ta Kuan and the Elettra .
