Elgato Systems ( Elgato for short ) is a German manufacturer of consumer electronics based in Munich . Elgato became known nationwide for its EyeTV product line, which was launched in 2002 and broadcast television to Macs and other devices. Elgato has received numerous awards for this and has been rated by the media as the market leader in this area. For example, the company produces hardware and software for intelligent living . Elgato was taken over by Corsair in July 2018 and will remain there as an independent brand.

history

First EyeTV model (2002)

In 1992 Markus Fest founded the company as "Miles Information Systems GmbH". He was initially best known for the CD recording software Toast, which was later sold to Adaptec and Roxio . In 2002, EyeTV was the first product to appear under the Elgato brand. EyeTV aroused wide media reception, made the company known and developed into the company's most important product. Since 2003 the company has been called "Elgato Systems GmbH".

From 2003 to 2005 Freddie Geier, who later became the boss of Apple Germany , acted as managing director of Elgato. Markus Fest then took over the management of the company again. Elgato's market share (DVB-T on the Mac) rose to around 90 percent (as of 2011). The company became the de facto market leader for television on the Mac. In recent years Elgato has expanded its portfolio to include numerous other areas, for example in the form of an intelligent key fob. In 2014, the company entered home automation . Elgato was one of the first manufacturers to support HomeKit from Apple iOS .

Products

"Eve" sensors

Elgato Eve are sensors, for example for power consumption, air quality or temperature. Elgato also offers sensors for controlling doors and windows. All products in this category are based on Apple HomeKit and can therefore only be controlled with an iPhone or iPad .

EyeTV

Elgato has received multiple awards for the EyeTV product line. For example, in 2004 the company received the “Editors Choice Award” in the “Best Consumer Hardware” category from the British trade magazine Macworld UK. In 2009, 2010 and 2011 a Macworld award was won three years in a row.

Game Capture HD

Elgato Game Capture HD is a product that enables users to record video games. It works with both computers and consoles such as Playstation , Wii U , Switch or Xbox . Elgato developed the product due to the fact that EyeTV, along with third-party hardware, was used by various users for this purpose.

"Avea" ( LED lamp )

At the same time as the presentation of Eve, in January 2015 the company presented an LED lamp under the Elgato Avea brand . It connects to the iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth Smart and can be controlled with an app . Avea fits into the E27 base and supports several mood modes, such as aurora borealis or a fireplace. In addition to Elgato Avea, this product line also includes Smart Power, a mobile charger with USB interface, and Smart Key, an intelligent key fob.

Thunderbolt Dock, Thunderbolt Drive +

The Elgato Thunderbolt Dock connects multiple devices to the computer via Thunderbolt . This also applies to other monitors, as there is an HDMI interface. Thunderbold Drive + is an external hard drive whose original version, Thunderbolt SSD, was the first Thunderbolt storage device that did not need to be supplied with external power.

Video Capture, Turbo.264 HD

With Elgato Video Capture, users can digitize analog videos, for example from VHS recorders or camcorders, and transfer them to PC, Mac or iPad. Turbo.264 HD is one of the company's few pure software products. It converts videos of various digital formats to H.264 .

criticism

In January 2015, Elgato launched a recall for the Smart Power iPhone and iPad charger. It was only presented at the 2014 International Radio Exhibition . The company said that on rare occasions, chargers of a given batch could overheat. Elgato offered affected customers to check their device using the serial number and then refunded the purchase price. A replacement of defective chargers was not planned, reported media.
