Eli Dayan ( Hebrew אלי דיין; Born October 25, 1949 in El-Kelâa M'Gouna , Morocco ) is an Israeli lawyer and politician of the Israeli Workers' Party ( Avoda ) , who was mayor of Ashkelon for many years , was a member of the Knesset between 1988 and 1996 and was temporarily Deputy Foreign Minister .

Life

After his immigration ( Aliyah ) to Israel in 1963, Dayan attended school and then studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , which he completed with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). After his military service in the Defense Forces , which he graduated as a lieutenant , he took up a position as a lawyer.

In 1978, Dayan, who is also the chairman of the Oded movement, became mayor of Ashkelon and held this position for 13 years until 1991.

On November 21, 1988 Dayan became a member of the Knesset in the 12th electoral term for the HaMa'arach , an alliance of left-wing parties to which the Avoda belonged, and was part of the Knesset until the end of the 13th electoral term on June 17, 1996 As a member of parliament, he was chairman of the subcommittee on banks between July 1992 and July 1995 and was temporarily a member of the main committee and the Knesset committees on international affairs and the environment, finance, the constitution, law and justice, the appointment of rabbis as judges, and state control , for the status of women and equality and for the secondary administration of television and radio as well as the joint committee for the law on national health insurance.

On July 25, 1995, Ben-Meir, who was temporarily chairman of the Avoda faction during the 13th electoral term , became deputy foreign minister and held this position as representative of the foreign ministers Shimon Peres and then Ehud Barak until he left the Knesset on 17. June 1996.
