Eli Noyes

Eli Noyes , born Eliot Noyes Jr. (* 1942 in Washington, DC ), is an American animator , graphic designer and director . His animated short film Clay or the Origin of Species was nominated for an Oscar in 1966 in the category “ Best Animated Short Film ”.

Live and act

Eli Noyes is the son of former IBM design director Eliot Noyes . He completed a degree in English from Harvard University , which he graduated in 1964. He then attended the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 1965 he met Derek Lamb , who taught animation at Harvard University, and took occasional classes. At this time Noyes also began to work with film animation. In 1966, his clay- animated short film Clay or the Origin of Species , in which he takes up the subject of evolution , was awarded an Oscar nomination for best animated short film.

In 1970 Noyes and his then partner Claudia Weill made a documentary about the International Design Conference in Aspen , in which his father also took part. In the 1970s, he experimented with sand animation, among other things . The short film Sandman was made at a trick table in his New York loft . He then used the characters from the film in a series of short sand animations that he made for the Children's Television Workshop (now the Sesame Workshop ). They each had a letter of the alphabet on the topic and were broadcast on Sesame Street for many years from 1974 . In 1978 Noyes founded the children's film production company Early Bird Specials with Kit and Geraldine Laybourne . Nickelodeon was one of the first clients . Geraldine Laybourne moved to Nickelodeon soon after, while her husband continued to work with Noyes. In 1983 they founded the production company Noyes & Laybourne , which produced the pilot episode of the animated film series Braingames in the same year .

Noyes worked as an animator for companies like Pixar , Disney and HBO . In the 1990s he was involved with Noyes & Laybourne in the production of the Nickelodeon children 's series Eureeka's Castle and the MTV animated series Liquid Television . He also produced numerous commercials and worked as a web designer for Oxygen Networks. In 1994 he published the interactive CD-ROM Ruff's Bone in the children's book series Living Books .

Noyes directed two animated documentaries: In 2008 the film Under Our Skin , which took up the subject of Lyme disease and made it onto the Oscar shortlist, and the following year The Most Dangerous Man in America - Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers , which was awarded in 2010 for was nominated for an Oscar.

In 2011 Noyes designed the 16-piece Go Green stamp series for the United States Postal Service , which shows examples of environmentally conscious behavior in everyday life.

Together with the producer and video graphic designer Ralph Guggenheim (* 1951), Noyes runs the animation production company Alligator Planet LLC in San Francisco .

Noyes lives in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco with his wife, artist Augusta Talbot . In 2009 they gave a joint exhibition at the Garage Gallery in Berkeley , where sculptures by Noyes were shown, among other things.
