Eligius Freudl

Eligius Freudl (born November 25, 1875 in Olbersdorf , † November 30, 1951 in Linz ) was an Austrian farmer , plant breeder and agricultural scientist .

Life

Eligius Freudl was born in 1875 as the first son of the farmer and Princely Lichtenstein pipe and water master Konstantin Freudl (1848–1926) and Theresia Zorn (1851–1916) in Olbersdorf. He comes from a widespread Freudl family in the northern part of the historic Schönhengstgau region . It was there in and around Landskron at least since the 16th century . This can be proven over many centuries in the places Olbersdorf, Wildenschwert , Knappendorf , Hertersdorf , Böhmisch Trübau , Nieder-Lichwe .

Eligius Freudl attended the Landskron high school . He studied agriculture and mathematics in Vienna . In 1897 he was a qualified farmer and accepted a position at the seed control station of the Vienna Agricultural and Botanical Research Station. He received his doctorate as Dr. phil., was employed as a civil servant in the Vienna Ministry of Agriculture from 1900 to 1910 and was appointed professor for plant breeding in 1911 at the Tetschen-Bodenbach Agricultural Academy . As head of the Research Institute for Plant Breeding, he remained in office under both Czech and German administration from 1918 to 1945. After the Sudetenland was added to the German Reich in 1938, Freudl belonged to the sacrificial ring of the NSDAP and the NSDDB .

After the Second World War (1945) he was expelled. After the expulsion, he first worked at the horticultural teaching and research institute in Pillnitz near Dresden. In 1946/47 he received a professorship with a teaching position for plant breeding at the University of Halle . In 1950 he retired and moved to Austria, where he died a year later.

Eligius Freudl is buried in the St. Barbara cemetery in Linz.
