Elisabeth Amalie Eugenia Maria Theresia Karoline Luise Josepha (born July 7, 1878 in Reichenau an der Rax ; † March 13, 1960 in Vaduz , Liechtenstein ) was an Archduchess of Austria .

Life

Elisabeth Amalie was a daughter of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria and Maria Theresa of Portugal . She married Prince Alois von und zu Liechtenstein , son of Alfred von und zu Liechtenstein and Henriette von Liechtenstein , on April 20, 1903 in Vienna. Emperor Franz Joseph I , however, demanded as a condition for the marriage that Prince Alois must give up Austrian citizenship because Elisabeth Amalie should not be the wife of a subject. Elisabeth Amalie had eight children with her husband, including the later Prince Franz Joseph II (1906–1989) of Liechtenstein. She was an enthusiastic huntress and accompanied her husband, who was Austro - Hungarian Lieutenant Colonel , through the garrisons until he took over the inherited rule of Groß Ullersdorf in Moravia in 1909 .

Elisabeth Amalie owned a car collection with 39 vehicles and had converted the stables in her Hungarian palace Stuhlweissenburg into garages. She was probably the most enthusiastic car fanatic of all noble women in Europe, but pursued her hobby rather calmly and secretly, so that most of her contemporaries did not know about her large car collection.

In the late phase of the Second World War , Franz Joseph II brought his mother Elisabeth Amalie and his father Alois, who had renounced the succession to the throne in Liechtenstein in 1923 in favor of Franz Joseph II, to Vaduz in front of the approaching war front. Elisabeth Amalie and her husband spent their last years there after losing their Moravian property. Elisabeth Amalie died on March 13, 1960 at the age of 81 in Vaduz and was buried in the royal crypt there. She was a member of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen .
