Marie Therese of Portugal

Maria Theresa ( Portuguese Dona Maria Teresa da Imaculada Conceição Fernanda Eulália Leopoldina Adelaide Isabel Carolina Micaela Rafaela Gabriela Francisca de Assis e de Paula Gonzaga Inês Sofia Bartolomea dos Anjos de Bragança ; *  August 24, 1855 in Kleinheubach , Bavaria ; † February 12, 1944 in Vienna ) was a princess of Bragança and Infanta of Portugal .

Life

Maria Theresa was a daughter of Michael I of Portugal and Princess Adelheid von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg .

After the death of her father, she lived with her family at Löwenstein Castle in Kleinheubach in Mainfranken (Bavaria). She was the third of seven children. She supported her mother, took care of her siblings' clothes and underwear and also took care of their upbringing.

On July 23, 1873, at the age of 17, she married the 39-year-old widower Karl Ludwig Archduke of Austria in Kleinheubach . He was the son of Franz Karl Archduke of Austria and Sophie Princess of Bavaria, who initiated the marriage. This marriage was already the third for him after he had been widowed twice and was alone with four children, Franz Ferdinand , Otto , Ferdinand Karl and Margarete Sophie .

Maria Theresa lovingly took care of her stepchildren.

She had a close relationship with the otherwise so closed Archduke Franz Ferdinand until the end of his life, as the beloved stepmother had even campaigned with Emperor Franz Joseph for his marriage to Sophie Chotek von Chotkowa . Maria Theresa had two daughters of her own with Karl Ludwig. After the death of Crown Prince Rudolf , she took the place of First Lady of the Empire in 1889 as the wife of the heir to the throne after Empress Elisabeth, who was mostly traveling . This she filled out even after the death of her husband, since her stepson Franz Ferdinand, the new heir to the throne, was illegally married.

During the First World War she worked as a nurse. After the collapse of the monarchy, she went into exile in Madeira with the last imperial couple, Karl and Zita , but spent the rest of her life in Vienna again, where she died on February 12, 1944 at the age of 88.
