Margarete Sophie Marie Annunciata Theresia Caroline Luise Josephine Johanna (born May 13, 1870 in Artstetten , Austria ; †  August 24, 1902 in Gmunden am Traunsee ) from the House of Habsburg-Lothringen was born Archduchess of Austria and by marriage Duchess of Württemberg .

Life

Margarete Sophie (named after her father's first wife, Margarete von Sachsen, and her grandmother Sophie , née Princess of Bavaria) was the only daughter of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria and his second wife Maria Annunziata of Naples-Sicily . She was the younger sister of Franz Ferdinand von Österreich-Este , to whom she was personally very close. When she was close to her first birthday, her mother died, but her stepmother Marie Therese von Braganza , her father's third wife , looked after her lovingly.

On January 24, 1893, the Archduchess - who had previously been the abbess of the aristocratic monastery at Prague's Hradschin from May 23, 1886 to January 15, 1893 - married Duke Albrecht von Württemberg , son of Duke Philipp von Württemberg and Archduchess Marie Therese von Austria . The marriage had seven children, one of whom died in infancy.

Margarete Sophie died at the age of 32 in Gmunden and was buried in the Württemberg family crypt of Ludwigsburg Palace . The husband Duke Albrecht did not enter into another marriage. After a crypt was built at the castle and parish church of St. Michael in Altshausen in 1927, the coffin was moved there.
