Elisabeth Augusta Wendling (singer, 1752)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elisabeth Augusta Wendling , also called Gustl Wendling , (born October 4, 1752 in Mannheim , † February 18, 1794 in Munich ) was a German opera singer ( soprano ).

The fact that Gustl's name was identical with her aunt Elisabeth Augusta Wendling (1746–1786), who was called Lisl , after her marriage to Gustl's uncle Franz Anton Wendling often leads to confusion.

Life

Gustl, the daughter of the singer Dorothea Wendling and the composer and flautist Johann Baptist Wendling , took singing lessons from her mother and made her debut at the Mannheim theater in a supporting role. Her singing achievements in Niccolò Piccini's “La Buona Figliuliola” in 1769 and her success in guest engagements in Zweibrücken soon made her one of the well-known singers of her time. In 1772 Johann Christian Bach made a marriage proposal to her, obviously unsuccessful, the rejection of which was probably the reason for breaking off his stay at the court in Mannheim. Gustl later became the lover of Joseph Anton Graf von Seeau (1713–1799), who had been court music director in Munich since 1753. Mozart commented extensively on these two love affairs in his family letters. In 1777, while still in Mannheim, he composed the ariette for voice and piano from “Oiseaux, si tous les ans” ( KV 307) for the young singer.

When her parents moved to Munich, she first sang in Vienna from 1782 to 1783 and from November 14, 1784 together with her mother as a court singer at the Munich Court Theater (→ Cuvilliés Theater ).
