Elisabeth Augusta Wendling (singer, 1746)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elisabeth Augusta Wendling , née Sarselli , also called Lisl , (born February 20, 1746 in Mannheim , † January 10, 1786 in Munich ) was a German opera singer ( coloratura soprano ).

Identical names to “Lisl's” niece “ Gustl ” (1752–1794) often lead to confusion.

Life

Lisl was the daughter of the tenor Pietro Sarselli and Carolina Volvasoris, both engaged at the Mannheim court theater . Lisl also began her career there in 1761 at the age of 15. In 1764 she married the court musician and violinist Franz Anton Wendling , the brother of the composer and flautist Johann Baptist Wendling . In 1770 she sang together with Anton Raaff in Niccolò Piccinnis Catone in Utica , in 1772 in the role of Rossane in Johann Christian Bach's Temistocle and in 1774 as Celia in Bach's Lucio Silla .

Through her vocal achievements she was one of the well-known opera singers of her time. On November 5, 1777, she performed in Salzburg , before accompanying Elector Karl Theodor in 1778 together with many other Mannheim musicians as part of his move to Munich . Mozart wrote for her the music for the role of Elektra in Idomeneo ( KV 366), which she played in Munich at the Cuvilliés Theater . Lisl ended her operatic career in 1785. Her daughter Dorothea (1767–1839) also took singing lessons from Lisl's sister-in-law Dorothea Wendling .

She is the wife of Johann Baptist Wendling's brother, whose daughter was the singer Elisabeth Augusta Wendling (1752–1794).
