Princess Elisabeth Marie Auguste of Bavaria , married Countess Seefried auf Buttenheim (born January 8, 1874 in Munich , † March 4, 1957 in Gresten ), was German nobleman and granddaughter of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Life

Elisabeth was the first daughter of Prince Leopold of Bavaria and his wife Archduchess Gisela of Austria . She was also the first grandchild of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth of Austria.

In November 1893, in Genoa (Italy), she secretly married the evangelical baron Otto Ludwig Philipp von Seefried auf Buttenheim (1870-1951), who was not in line with her rank, and grandson of the Bavarian general and Greek Minister of War Heinrich Christian von Schmaltz (1787-1865), who was only ennobled in 1817 Great-grandson of General Ludwig von Deroy (1786–1864), who was raised to the rank of Count in 1861 .

Elisabeth's father and especially her grandfather, Prince Regent Luitpold , did not agree to the marriage. It took years before the relationship with the father relaxed again, largely thanks to the advocacy of her mother Gisela and her grandfather, Emperor Franz Joseph. Both gave the couple their blessings in retrospect and Franz Joseph gave the couple a castle near Vienna . He appointed Otto von Seefried lieutenant in the Imperial and Royal 1st Infantry Regiment in Opava , Austrian Silesia , and in 1904 elevated him to the rank of count. 1908 Graf inherited Seefried from the poet Josephine Knorr their castle Stiebar in Gresten , Lower Austria , which is still the seat of the family now.

The old emperor was obviously sympathetic to his granddaughter; although she was officially “only” a countess, he visited her from his retirement home, Schönbrunn Palace , in her Viennese residence in Unter-St.-Veit .

Elisabeth's marriage was happy and the couple had five children. However, the first child Gisela died shortly after birth. Elisabeth's children and the children of her aunt Marie Valerie had dance and riding lessons together.

She died in 1957 at the age of 83 and was buried in the Gresten cemetery in Lower Austria.
