Elisabeth Schroedter (born March 11, 1959 in Dresden ) is a German politician and was a member of the European Parliament for Alliance 90 / The Greens from 1994 to 2014 .

Life

After attending the polytechnic high school , Elisabeth Schroedter completed training as a medical-technical assistant , environmental consultant and pedagogue.

Political career

Elisabeth Schroedter began her political engagement as a youth in the GDR opposition movement . In 1989 she joined the civil rights movement Neues Forum , which had a major impact on the transition period in the GDR .

In early 1990 she became a member of the Green Party in the GDR , which merged with the West German Greens in December 1990. In addition, Elisabeth Schroedter was the founder of the Association for Green Citizens Movement in Brandenburg Local Politics in 1991 , and was its spokesperson for many years. Since 1990 she has been a member of the Green League , a network of East German environmental initiatives. Due to her experience in environmental policy, she was appointed to the environmental advisory board of the first environmental ministry in the state of Brandenburg in 1992 . From 1990 to 1993 she was also a member of the local council of Langerwisch .

Work in the European Parliament

With the first European elections for the "New Länder" in 1994, Elisabeth Schroedter entered the European Parliament for Alliance 90 / The Greens. She is a member of the Greens / Efa group .

From 1994 to 1996 she was President and from 1999 to 2004 Vice-President of the Delegation for relations with Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus. At that time she was active in the Foreign Affairs Committee and helped shape the EU's enlargement process. In this context, she was a deputy member of the delegation in the EU-Poland joint parliamentary committee from 1999 to 2004 and was rapporteur for the accession process in Latvia.

From 2004 onwards she was more involved than before in European regional policy , as well as in employment and social policy and was a member of the relevant committees. As a member of the delegation in the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee and a member of the delegation for relations with Belarus, she was also in the parliamentary assembly for EURO-NEST until the end of her term of office , thus continuing her work in the EU's neighborhood policy.

After moving back in 2009, she was elected Vice-President of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee, where she is an advocate of common minimum social standards in the EU. She therefore focuses her work where the EU lays down basic rules for working conditions and the social protection of workers. She works on the topics of the Posting of Workers Directive and the Working Time Directive . She also wrote an own-initiative report on green jobs and promoted the use of the employment potential of a sustainable economy in the EU. At the same time, she worked to ensure that these new employment opportunities are good work and that the dialogue between the social partners in the new sectors of the ecological energy transition is strengthened.

In the Committee on Regional Development, she was responsible for the Green Group on the structural fund reform for the period 2014–2020 and was delegated to the relevant parliamentary working groups.

In the list of the party at the Federal Delegates' Conference on February 8, 2014 in Dresden, it was defeated in the candidacy for 5th place with 19.36% against Barbara Lochbihler . She did not run for another place on the list and thus resigned from the European Parliament.

Personal

Elisabeth Schroedter is married and has three sons.

Honors

In 2002 Elisabeth Schroedter was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for her commitment during the fall of 1989/90.
