Elisabeth of Anhalt (1545–1574)
Elisabeth von Anhalt (born October 15, 1545 in Dessau , † September 26, 1574 in Barby ) was named Elisabeth III. Abbess of the free secular monastery of Gernrode and Frose . She left the monastery and through her marriage became Countess of Barby .
Life
Elisabeth was a daughter of Prince Johann II of Anhalt (1504–1551) from his marriage to Margareta (1511–1577), daughter of Prince Elector Joachim I of Brandenburg .
Elisabeth was elected abbess of the imperial abbey of Sankt Cyriakus in Gernrode in 1565 . Her attempts to rehabilitate the indebted abbey were unsuccessful, which is why she left office in 1570 and got married. Her niece Anna Maria von Anhalt followed her as abbess .
She married on July 19, 1570 in Bernburg Count Wolfgang II of Barby and Mühlingen (1531-1615). Elisabeth got into arguments with her brother, Prince Joachim Ernst , because of the abbey and her right to an abbey. The dispute was compared shortly before the death of Elisabeth, whereby she was to be settled with a sum of 76,000 Reichstalers. From their marriage Elisabeth had a son Christoph, who however died again early. Elisabeth succumbed to "consumption" and was buried in Barby.
