Elise Heß (born December 9, 1898 in Biberach ; † May 9, 1987 in Gundelsheim ) was a German midwife and social democrat . She was active in the resistance against the National Socialists .

Life

Elise Heß was a daughter of the master mason Heinrich Senghaas, who was chairman of the SPD local association in Biberach from 1925 to 1933 and was a member of the local council from 1908 to 1933.

She was married to Robert Hess and from 1924 to 1959 she was a midwife in her place of birth, Biberach. During this time, she performed obstetrics more than 1,500 times. From 1932 she was also responsible for the communities of Bonfeld and Fürfeld , which is why she was the first woman in Biberach to buy a car.

After she had been pelted with dirt as "red people" after the seizure of power by children wearing swastika flags and had resisted, she was visited by 40 members of the SA ; In a dialogue with them, she said, among other things, that she would “not let the children throw her with rubbish” that she had brought into the world. Elise Hess took a stand against the National Socialists and distributed, among other things, leaflets. Her husband Robert Hess, who was his father-in-law's successor in the local council, resigned from his position on the council after hearing that SPD members in Neckargartach had been thrown down the stairs of the town hall by National Socialists; As a reason, he gave the mayor that the Biberach town hall has a steep staircase. After Fritz Ulrich's arrest , Robert Hess and two helpers took books and furniture out of his apartment in order to bring them to safety in Biberach. Resistance materials were also smuggled from Heidelberg to Heilbronn via Wimpfen and Biberach .

Elise-Heß-Strasse in Biberach has been named after Elise Heß since 1994.
