Elizabeth Connell
Elizabeth Connell ( October 22, 1946 in Port Elizabeth , South Africa - February 18, 2012 in London ) was a South African opera singer ( soprano ).
Life
She studied at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and at the London Opera Center. She made her debut at the Wexford Festival Opera in 1972 and sang in the opening of the Sydney Opera House in 1973 .
Connell sang at major opera houses around the world, e.g. B. Covent Garden , at the Scala , the Metropolitan Opera , the Bavarian State Opera , the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Vienna State Opera as well as the Bayreuth Festival .
From 1985 to 2000 she sang a total of 51 performances in eight different roles at the Vienna State Opera. She was also heard at the Salzburg Festival , for example as Elettra in Mozart's Idomeneo with Luciano Pavarotti . The range of subjects she sang was remarkable: most recently she appeared mainly in highly dramatic roles, including Elektra, Isolde and Brünnhilde.
In 2004 she sang Leonore in Fidelio in a Cape Town Opera production . The performance to celebrate the first democratic elections in South Africa took place on Robben Island .
Her last opera appearance was in February 2011 as Turandot at the Prague State Opera , in October and November 2011 she also gave arias and lieder recitals in Germany, where she also performed the aria of Frau Fluth from Otto Nicolai's Die lustigen Frauen von Windsor for lyrical coloratura soprano offered.
Connell died of lung cancer at the age of 65.
She was particularly known for her portrayals of Wagner and Strauss heroines.
