Elizabeth Margaret Smith, Baroness Smith of Gilmorehill (born June 4, 1940 in Scotland ) is a Scottish politician with the Labor Party and has been a member of the House of Lords since 1995 . She was the wife of British Labor politician and party leader John Smith .

Life

Elizabeth Margaret Bennett attended Hutchesons' Girls Grammar School in Glasgow and then studied Russian and French at the University of Glasgow . There she met her future husband John Smith in 1961 and married him in July 1967. Their marriage resulted in three daughters. After completing her studies, she taught French. In 1998 she was awarded by the University of Glasgow , the honorary doctorate in law awarded.

From 1995 to 1998 she sat on the council of the British Heart Foundation , from 1995 to 2012 she was chairman of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society , from 1995 to 2001 she was on the Press Complaints Commission (comparable to the German Press Council ) and from 1996 until 1999 member of the board of the Edinburgh International Festival . In November 1996, she became the spokesperson for tourism in the National Heritage Team , assuming a leading role in her party for the first time. She held this position until 1997. Also from 1996 she was a member of the British Petroleum (BP) Scottish Advisory Board . Membership ended in 2003.

In memory of her husband, who suddenly passed away in 1994, she assumed the chairmanship of the John Smith Fellowship Trust, founded in 1996 . The Trust makes every year 20 students from Russia , the Ukraine , from Georgia , Armenia and Moldova about to study six weeks on the topics of democracy and government in Britain long.

On February 17, 1995, she was raised as Baroness Smith of Gilmorehill , of Gilmorehill in the District of the City of Glasgow, and thus received a seat in the House of Lords for life . From 1998 to 2001 she took over the presidency in Birkbeck, University of London from Lord Healy and subsequently became a fellow of the university.

She is currently the patron of the Children's Parliament , Trustee of the Mariinsky Theater Trust , Chairwoman of the English-Speaking Union and President of the Scottish Opera .
